I am thrilled to be featured this month in The Florentine, Florence’s premier English language news publication! With distribution of over 10,000 copies in print and online, throughout Tuscany and across the pond in New York City, this magazine is read by expats and lovers of beautiful Florence the world over. It is quite an honor to be featured on these pages! Thank you, the Florentine and to writer & editor Mary Gray!

The article tells the story of my love affair with this stunning and historic city. The above photo was taken back in 2008, when I was studying in Firenze during my junior year in college. As I sat on that rooftop terrace, humming and picking out some of my very first songs, I never could have imagined that the rambling, musical path I had started on would lead me back here — but I am sure glad it did! The bicontinental life of a troubadour has blessed me with 3 EPs, a full album (and another one on the way), countless concerts across the continents, and last but certainly not least – the man I am proud to call my husband & musical partner, Bernardo Baglioni. Supporting the legendary Judy Collins: 2 Sold Out Shows!

September 11 and 12, 2015: Marina is honored to be supporting legendary songwriter, author, painter, and activist Judy Collins for two sold-out concerts at the stunning Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, MA!

With an incredible catalog of 50+ albums, Collins has been a leader and inspiration for songwriters and activists the world over since the 1960s. She has earned several Grammy Awards, and has released multiple gold- and platinum-selling albums. Known for her mellifluous voice, unparalleled artistry and musicianship, and her creative interpretations of traditional and well-known songs, Collins is an icon who has long been an important influence on Marina’s music and career.

In fact, the best way to explain her feelings on supporting such a folk legend, Marina feels, is to quote one of Collins’ own lyrics (!):

“Pinch me darlin’ I think I’m dreamin’
This is too good to be true
…”

Album Review: Unbound

Music reviewer Bill Copeland has given a thorough and highly complementary review of Marina’s new album, Unbound (2013), in his music blog. Many thanks, Bill! Here are some excerpts:

Many of her songs have a haunting quality, as if there is an underlying spirit driving them on… No matter, though, which technique she employs, genre she borrows from, or inflection she sings in, Evans has come up with a complete artistic expression of where she is today.

She’s a master of using self-restraint to keep a lid on her power, which makes her song a more powerful expression, her power simmering just beneath the surface. […] Everything comes together perfectly around Evans’ heartfelt expressions, like a mother’s arms holding a child, like a painter getting every detail just right. […] She creates as much dramatic feeling as two gunfighters approaching each other with hands over holsters.

Unbound feels like its title suggests. Evans clearly feels free to use whichever technique, genre, and instrument as colors in her palette to achieve the musical experience she seeks. She uses rock’s aggression when she wants her song to have kick. She infuses other songs with jazz inflection to make them move freely. She even relies on flamenco structures to add more snap to her rhythmic thrusts. There is much to enjoy on Evans’ Unbound album, and all of it comes together as a nice, wholesome, fully realized reflection of an artist who knows where she wants to go.
