Exciting news! Marina is honored to be supporting none other than Dar Williams at the beautiful Cabot Theater in Beverly, MA on March 17!

One of the most lauded singer-songwriters of her generation, Dar Williams has been captivating audiences with her sheer elegance and honesty in her folk-pop songwriting since the early ’90s. Williams’ growth as an individual over her almost three-decade-long career has gone hand-in-hand with her evolution as an artist. She has toured with such distinguished artists as Joan Baez, Patty Griffin, Ani DiFranco, and Shawn Colvin, and is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post‘s Green Blog. A dedicated environmentalist, Williams toured throughout the northeast visiting children’s camps and planting bee gardens in summer 2011.

Marina has long been a fan of Dar’s, first having seen her 15+ years ago (!) at a solo acoustic show. Dar’s exuberant stage presence and insightful, funny, and honest songwriting have continued to inspire Marina as her own performance and writing career has developed.

This promises to be a memorable night of original music performed by one of the biggest names in American folk, supported by a local rising star. Don’t miss it! Click here for tickets and event details.

“A Part of Something Bigger” — Live Review!

Marina, Berna, and Adam at the narrows

Last weekend, Bernardo and I were honored to share the stage with rising star Adam Ezra and his fabulous band at the beautiful Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River, MA. Several days later, while still riding high on the show’s good vibes, we were pleasantly surprised to see a glowing review from Tony Adams at the Live Music News & Review blog! Click here to check it out.

Tony is a dedicated fan of Adam’s, as you will read, and the sheer joy with which he writes of the concert is characteristic of Adam’s enthusiastic and inspired fans. As Adam said himself onstage, his main source of inspiration in writing, performing, and listening to live music is the feeling of being “a part of something bigger than yourself.” And this concert was no exception: we were all swept up in the moment, the music, the experience, singing and swaying together at concert’s end like the very best of old friends. It was an honor to be a part of this night, and to be a part of this incredible community that Adam has built up over many, many years on the road… and it certainly gave us something to aspire to.

Rising Stars in Folk: Marina Evans & Alice Howe

Friday, March 3: Singer/songwriters Alice Howe and Marina Evans join forces for a night of original acoustic music at The Burren. The Boston-born songwriters have traveled far and wide with their music — in Alice‘s case, to the western shores of Seattle, and in Marina’s case, across the Atlantic to Florence, Italy (Marina will be joined onstage by Bernardo Baglioni, Italian-born guitarist and producer, and, incidentally, her husband!). On this rare occasion the two songbirds  find themselves back in Boston at the same time, and are eager to share their new music — featuring sweet, sultry vocals, insightful lyrics, and unusual melodies — with a hometown crowd.

Opening for the Adam Ezra Group!

AEG

Saturday, February 25: Marina & Bernardo head down to Fall River, MA to support New England favorite the Adam Ezra Group at the Narrows Center for the Arts! Marina’s sultry voice and Bernardo’s gritty slide guitar are a perfect warmup to the rollicking, heartfelt, socially conscious music of AEG, a group that’s fast-rising to national acclaim. This is one show of original, homegrown New England music that you won’t want to miss!

Tickets:

About the Adam Ezra Group: A tireless touring outfit, the Adam Ezra Group (AEG) played upwards of 200 shows in 2015, often devoting their time to local charities and always going out of their way to connect with fans. The Group is made up of lead singer, songwriter and guitarist, Adam Ezra, Alex Martin on drums, Turtle on percussion, Corinna Smith on fiddle, Francis Hickey on bass and Josh Gold on keys. Together they are creating a powerful, inclusive community around AEG shows that is beginning to be compared to a social-movement as much as a traditional music fan-base.

Homeward Bound: Stateside Summer Shows

Marina & Berna in VT 2015

It’s that time of year again – when I fly across the Atlantic from Italy to Cape Ann, Massachusetts, only to hit the ground running (& singing!) for a summer tour across New England. And I couldn’t be more excited!

This summer, it’s quite the mix: solo acoustic shows, concerts in duo with my musical partner & killer slide guitarist Bernardo Baglioni, and performances fronting the incredible Compaq Big Band. Everything from house concerts (in living rooms, recording studios, and one on the stunning shores of Lake Winnipesaukee!) to museums, from the decks of one of Gloucester’s historic schooners to the hallowed halls of aged New England churches — there’s a concert for everyone. Click here to see the full calendar!

I’m also looking forward to a benefit concert for the Schooner Adventure, “the last of the Gloucestermen,” a historic ship that is a living testament to our rich maritime history (August 12). I’ll be performing in acoustic duo with Bernardo aboard the ship as she’s docked in her beautiful home port of Gloucester, MA. Come join us for a sunset concert beneath the spars!

More concerts are being added all the time, so stay tuned — click here to view the full concert calendar, or follow me on Facebook or Instagram for up-to-the-minute news. Many thanks all — looking forward to seeing you (and singing to you!) along the road!

Located in historic Piazza Signoria in Florence, the Michael Collins pub’s underground cantina will bring you back in time. Located within an imposing palazzo with views of the Uffizi Gallery & Palazzo Vecchio (home to the famous Salone del Cinquecento, the seat of Florentine government, as well as stunning de’ Medici apartments), this promises to be an intimate show in an unusual setting. Join us, amici Italiani!

May 18, 2016: Circolo Arci il Progresso, 10pm

On the other side of town, this community-run events center and concert hall has housed concerts by many local and international artists. We’ll be performing an acoustic concert on this beautiful stage, beneath old wooden beams and suspended above a marble floor. This concert is part of Bob Dylan Week, a weeklong celebration of the famous troubadour. Throughout Florence, there will be poetry readings, art installations, concerts, and more – and we’re thrilled to be part of the lineup! We’ll be paying homage to Dylan along with other links in the songwriter chain, such as Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, and more.

In the coming days we’ll hit Maine, Connecticut, and New York City – and on Saturday, we’ll be opening for none other than incredible troubadour, artist, and author Ellis Paul! Album Review: Unbound

412_cropped

Music reviewer Bill Copeland has given a thorough and highly complementary review of Marina’s new album, Unbound (2013), in his music blog. Many thanks, Bill! Here are some excerpts:

Many of her songs have a haunting quality, as if there is an underlying spirit driving them on… No matter, though, which technique she employs, genre she borrows from, or inflection she sings in, Evans has come up with a complete artistic expression of where she is today.

She’s a master of using self-restraint to keep a lid on her power, which makes her song a more powerful expression, her power simmering just beneath the surface. […] Everything comes together perfectly around Evans’ heartfelt expressions, like a mother’s arms holding a child, like a painter getting every detail just right. […] She creates as much dramatic feeling as two gunfighters approaching each other with hands over holsters.

Unbound feels like its title suggests. Evans clearly feels free to use whichever technique, genre, and instrument as colors in her palette to achieve the musical experience she seeks. She uses rock’s aggression when she wants her song to have kick. She infuses other songs with jazz inflection to make them move freely. She even relies on flamenco structures to add more snap to her rhythmic thrusts. There is much to enjoy on Evans’ Unbound album, and all of it comes together as a nice, wholesome, fully realized reflection of an artist who knows where she wants to go.
