Opening for Kate Taylor at the Regent!

BIG NEWS! I am thrilled to be supporting none other than Sister Kate Taylor this November at the beautiful Regent Theater in Arlington, MA! Kate Taylor’s “Sister Kate Revisited” tour resurrects the singer/songwriter’s debut album, released back in 1971. Sharing a velvet voice and penchant for folk music with her brothers James and Livingston, Sister Kate is back on the scene after a long hiatus, and is not to be missed.

Bernardo and I are honored to kick off the concert, on November 8th, with an acoustic opening set of my songs. Join us for a night of original music by two songstresses in one of the Boston area’s premier theaters! Click here for tickets and more info.

Rising Stars in Folk: Marina Evans & Alice Howe

Friday, March 3: Singer/songwriters Alice Howe and Marina Evans join forces for a night of original acoustic music at The Burren. The Boston-born songwriters have traveled far and wide with their music — in Alice‘s case, to the western shores of Seattle, and in Marina’s case, across the Atlantic to Florence, Italy (Marina will be joined onstage by Bernardo Baglioni, Italian-born guitarist and producer, and, incidentally, her husband!). On this rare occasion the two songbirds  find themselves back in Boston at the same time, and are eager to share their new music — featuring sweet, sultry vocals, insightful lyrics, and unusual melodies — with a hometown crowd.

More about the Marblehead/Salem School of Music:

At the Marblehead and Salem Schools of Music, we strive to provide a total musical experience for each student. Drawing on the wide-ranging talents of our teaching staff, we are able to match student and teacher based on a variety of criteria, including personality, learning style, goals, and interests. As part of private lessons, all students are given the opportunity to collaborate with other musicians and to showcase their skills; either live, at a formal or informal recital, or in the recording studio.

We make lessons fun and our studios funky, but everything is rooted in pure, wholesome academics. We track student’s weekly progress in a password protected database to make parent-teacher communication seamless. We take pride in the accomplishments of all of our students and view their growth both as individuals and as musicians as our success.

On Saturday, 12/12, I’m hitting a brand new venue (for me!), the Cat in the Cradle Coffeehouse in Byfield, MA! I will be splitting the bill with Boston folkie Lenny Solomon, who over a 50+ year career has recorded several albums and has supported such legends as Bonnie Raitt, Chris Smither, and Spider John. Drawing on similar influences & traditions, Lenny’s and my songwriting and performance styles are distinctly different from one another, yet complementary. This promises to be a great, dynamic show of original music — don’t miss it!

Marina & Berna are thrilled to join the lineup of Outside the Box, a new, free, 6-day music & performing arts festival occurring in downtown Boston from July 14-19! Outside the Box founder and chief sponsor Ted Cutler says that after seeing so much unsung talent in Boston — from musicians to dancers to theater troupes and beyond — he wanted to build a major festival to celebrate the unsigned and emerging artists of our city and New England.

“We created Outside the Box to bring the community together through a celebration of the performing arts. We want to create a culture change.” -Ted Cutler

Featuring performers from across New England, Outside the Box has generated great press and scored some very well-known headliners, including Guster, The Gin Blossoms, and Kacey Musgraves.

Marina & Berna perform on Thursday, July 16 at 1:30pm on the Tremont Street stage. Click here to visit the Outside the Box website to find a full schedule, directions, and more. Come on out, Boston — it’s going to be a beautiful summer fest!

“California” to air on Boston NPR!

WGBH logo

Great news, everybody: an instrumental version of Marina’s song “California” has been selected to air between radio shows on Boston’s National Public Radio (NPR) station, WGBH! Tune in to 89.7 FM or click here to stream online, and keep your ears open for a familiar tune.

Some of you may have noticed when listening to NPR (in Boston, New England, or anywhere across the country) that there is a brief musical interlude that plays as one show finishes and before another begins. These interludes are always instrumental. This is where you will be hearing “California”!

Years ago, when she was just at the beginning of her songwriting career (with only a few songs under her belt), Marina learned of music placement on NPR from one of her music professors. He said submitting well-crafted, original, instrumental tracks to NPR was a great way to gain exposure for your music, and perhaps to earn a royalty or two. At the time this seemed like such a long shot that it slipped away into the back corner of Marina’s mind — only to be resurrected 7 years later, when a representative from WGBH contacted her and requested instrumental tracks for several of her songs! So here we are.

A huge THANK YOU goes out to Unbound co-producer, multi-instrumentalist, and Marina’s husband & musical partner Bernardo Baglioni, as well as to Marina’s Italian band who recorded the album. You’re on the U.S. airwaves, fellas!

Tune in and keep your ears peeled — and see if you can recognize “California” without Marina’s lead vocals!
