On Saturday, 12/12, I’m hitting a brand new venue (for me!), the Cat in the Cradle Coffeehouse in Byfield, MA! I will be splitting the bill with Boston folkie Lenny Solomon, who over a 50+ year career has recorded several albums and has supported such legends as Bonnie Raitt, Chris Smither, and Spider John. Drawing on similar influences & traditions, Lenny’s and my songwriting and performance styles are distinctly different from one another, yet complementary. This promises to be a great, dynamic show of original music — don’t miss it!

Green Mountain Bound: Vermont Shows!

VT music fest

Next weekend, Marina & Bernardo head up north to the beautiful green mountains of Vermont for two shows! The first is the Vermont Music Fest on August 8, held on the rolling farmland of Lareau Farm in Waitsfield, VT. Featuring original acts from across New England on two stages, as well as games, art, and locally-sourced food and drink, this festival promises to be a full day of fun for the whole family. Click here to visit their website and learn more.

Next up is an intimate house concert in nearby Morrisville, just outside of Stowe, VT, on August 9. “Weather permitting, we’ll play outside on the hillside, surrounded by those rolling hills,” Marina says. “We’re excited to go from a festival stage to the intimacy of a house concert the next day, and hope you’ll join us!” If you’re in the area and would like to join in the fun, send Marina an email for more details.

The New England Music Awards are just four short days away — and Marina is honored and thrilled to have been nominated for Female Performer of the Year! Check out the special NEMA issue of Granite Coast Magazine for the full lineup of nominees, performers, and the lowdown on the event itself, coming up this Saturday, April 18th.

Here’s an excerpt from Marina’s nominee profile:

“Evans’ drive, passion, and versatility are just as evident in her songs — which deftly navigate a range of genres, from folk to pop to rock and roll — as they are in her track record: since 2011 she has independently released 3 original EPs and a full length album, toured across the U.S., to London, and to Italy; […] been featured on local, regional, and internet radio; and earned two consecutive nominations for Female Performer of the Year at the New England Music Awards (2014 and 2015).”

Cape Ann Singer for Female Performer of the Year

From the Gloucester Daily Times (click for full article):

Marina Evans, a local singer-songwriter, has been nominated for Female Performer of the Year at the New England Music Awards for the second year in a row.

Her competition in the Female Performer of the Year category in 2015 is  Ashley Jordan, Jessie Chris, Sarah Barrios, Faith Ziegler and Anna Lombard.

In this competition, music fans play a significant role in the selection of the winners by voting online for their preferred performers, so Evans is hopeful that Cape Ann fans will cast their votes. Voting is open to the public until March 1; visit nemusicawards.com to vote for your favorite artists, and to learn more about the New England Music Awards.

“The New England Music Awards are presented every year to the musicians who call New England their home and whose dedication, spirit, and achievements over the last year have without a doubt established them as a contributing force to the most robust and diverse music scene in the country,” according to the website.

The nominating committee consists of a variety of music industry experts including journalists, radio personalities, talent buyers, event planners, record label executives and others.

Evans combines a background in jazz with traditional folk and indie rock. Over the past decade, she has cultivated her unique sound. Her career began on Cape Ann at the age of 16. Since then she has performed throughout the United States, in London, and in Italy, and she has written and recorded three original EPs and the full-length album “Unbound.”

Both her new album and her live performances have received high marks over the past year.

“She creates as much dramatic feeling as two gunslingers approaching each other with hands over holsters,” according to Bill Copeland Music News.

She also stepped up to help out in a community service sort of way last year. She performed at a Rockport PTO musical fund-raising event last spring, and in a benefit concert for the North Shore Health Project this past fall. In both instances, the crowd was eager to purchase her music after the show and learn more about her.

Supporting Les Sampou at the Rose Garden!

Rose-Garden-Coffeehouse 2

  • Who: Marina Evans opens for Les Sampou
  • What: American singer-songwriters, blues, country & folk
  • Where: The Congregational Church, 17 West St., Mansfield, MA
  • When: Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, 8 pm
  • Tickets: $20 at the door or in advance at www.rosegardenfolk.com

Les Sampou makes her return to the Rose Garden Coffeehouse on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, bringing her America/folk/blues and rock styling to our stage for the first time since 1998. A guitarist with a powerful, sultry voice, Sampou often plays with a full band. Though she will perform solo at the Rose Garden, Sampou is a commanding stage presence by herself. She can sing blues with the passion of Bonnie, country with the angst of Emmylou and rock with the fire of Janis. But every note is brilliantly original. “Lyrics are at the heart of my songs,” says Sampou. “I wrap a melody and harmony around them to bring out the meaning and emotion. When you listen to my songs, you don’t have to wonder what I’m talking about.”

From the Bottom Line in New York City, to the Montreal Jazz Festival, to the Music Circus right here in Cohasset, Mass., Sampou has played her heart out in front of crowds of 20 to 20,000. She has opened for legends such as Aretha Franklin, Heart and Sugarland. Les has given workshops at Berklee School of Music and appeared on the top syndicated radio programs such as Acoustic Cafe, World Cafe, and NPR. Her soaring vocals , strong guitar playing and upbeat material of cross-styles and ballads will leave you talking about her show long after the lights go out.

Sampou has released five albums, three on her own label and two on Rounder Records. Her second album, “Fall from Grace,” topped the Gavin Americana Charts nationwide. Her most recent release “Lonesomeville” (2010) charted number 2 on the US/European Americana F.A.R. Charts and led to her guest performance at the 25th Anniverary SXSW Conference in Austin, TX. Les is working on her sixth album to be released in 2015.

Marina Evans opens

Marina Evans of Rockport, Mass. – recently nominated as Female Performer of the Year at the New England Music Awards – will open for Sampou, performing her own songs that combine jazz, traditional folk, and an indie rock edge. Evans combines various styles, genres, and instrumentation – from sweet ballads to folk anthems to straight up rock and roll – in her latest self-produced and self-released album, Unbound (2013). Her music has been described as “swellingly beautiful,” “raucous,” and “anthemic” in the Noise Magazine, and her live performance “creates as much dramatic feeling as two gunfighters approaching each other with hands over holsters.” Evans has released 3 EPs and a full length album in the past three years, and has toured with them from her hometown to New York City, Nashville, New Orleans, Los Angeles, London, across Italy, and everywhere in between. In 2014, she supported such folk greats as Loudon Wainwright III, Ellis Paul, Antje Duvekot and Meg Hutchinson, and is thrilled to share the stage with Les to kick off 2015!
