Big news, everybody: I’m back in the studio again working on a brand new original album entitled Tide and Stars! As with my two most recent records, Unboundand The Tuscan Sessions, I am working with Italian producer (and my husband & musical partner, incidentally) Bernardo Baglioni. Unlike our past two records — both recorded here in Italy, with our Italian band — this time we’ll be recording with a mix of Italian and American musicians, and we’ll be doing so on both sides of the pond.
We hit the studio this week in Florence, Italy with Florentine drummer Donald Renda (pictured above), who is also featured on both Unbound and The Tuscan Sessions. And as usual, he nailed it! Next up are the basses, followed by guitars, mandolins, and possibly dobro & banjo — and finally, we’ll wrap things up with the vocal tracks.
This record takes a decidedly more acoustic, folk/americana turn than my last two projects, and I’m looking forward to realizing these songs in a more pared-down context. The songs are direct, to the point, and hark back to traditional song forms & structures. It’s raw, it’s true, and it’s me — so it’s thrilling, and more than a little scary, to bring this music to life and to share it with the world. That said — I can’t wait! Stay tuned for more news & updates as the project moves forward. Onwards!
September 11 and 12, 2015: Marina is honored to be supporting legendary songwriter, author, painter, and activist Judy Collins for two sold-out concerts at the stunning Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, MA!
With an incredible catalog of 50+ albums, Collins has been a leader and inspiration for songwriters and activists the world over since the 1960s. She has earned several Grammy Awards, and has released multiple gold- and platinum-selling albums. Known for her mellifluous voice, unparalleled artistry and musicianship, and her creative interpretations of traditional and well-known songs, Collins is an icon who has long been an important influence on Marina’s music and career.
In fact, the best way to explain her feelings on supporting such a folk legend, Marina feels, is to quote one of Collins’ own lyrics (!):
“Pinch me darlin’ I think I’m dreamin’
This is too good to be true…”
Welp, against many odds, WE MADE IT! Thanks to an amazing groundswell of support from over 200 friends, family members, and fans, we surpassed the funding goal for my new album! Holy hat! I am still stunned, 3 weeks later.
That said, this laudatory post is a bit behind the times ONLY because we have been working diligently on preparations for the studio. This means: rehearsals with the band (grande Berna, Donny e Leo!) and pre-production – working out arrangements, and testing out sounds and ideas. But don’t worry: though we’ve discussed it, the nose flute as of now will NOT be making a cameo. Laying out the groundwork beforehand frees us up once we’re in the studio to focus on the creative, the spontaneous. We start at the end of next week, and let me tell you: I can’t wait!
More updates to come – we head up to the studio next Thursday. So: THANKS AGAIN to all of you generous music lovers who emailed, shared, donated, and sent along words of encouragement throughout the Kickstarter campaign. This is a fantastic opportunity – not least of all because YOU had the heart to give it to me! – and I feel incredibly lucky. Rock on, everybody!
